Instructions for use:

The active substance is xylometazoline. Xylene is a pharmacological drug based on vasoconstrictor substances used to treat the common cold.

Composition and form of release

According to the instructions Xilen is available in the form of nasal drops.

In addition to the active substance, nasal drops also contain auxiliary components: benzalkonium chloride, disodium edetate, sodium hydrogen phosphate dodecahydrate, potassium dihydrogen phosphate, sodium chloride, water.

Xylene solution is produced in concentrations of 0.1% and 0.05%. In a plastic bottle (or glass) 10 ml of this drug.

Pharmacological action of Xylene

According to the instructions, Xilen has a decongestant effect due to the provision of a local vasoconstrictor effect. With narrowing of the blood vessels of the nasal mucosa, edema and hyperemia decrease, and the patency of the nasal passages is restored, which facilitates nasal breathing and relieves nasal congestion. Xylen begins to have an effect almost immediately after application, the effect lasts up to 10 hours.

Since the drug is used topically, it is practically not absorbed into the blood. Modern methods to detect its concentration in the blood after application fails.

Indications for use

Xylene is used for acute rhinitis caused by viral respiratory infections. Also, the drug is indicated for acute allergic rhinitis, sinusitis, otitis media (as part of complex treatment to reduce swelling of the nasopharyngeal mucosa). Xilen is used before rhinoscopy (endoscopic method for examining the nasal passages and nasopharynx).

Contraindications

This drug is contraindicated in case of hypersensitivity to its components, with severe atherosclerosis, arterial hypertension, tachycardia and glaucoma.

Xilen is contraindicated in patients with atrophic rhinitis, as well as in patients who have a history of surgical operations on the meninges. Children under 6 years of age are contraindicated to use a 0.1% solution of this drug, a special children's dosage (0.05% solution) should be used.

Xylen should be used with extreme caution in patients with diabetes mellitus, prostatic hyperplasia, hyperthyroidism, and coronary heart disease. If there are contraindications to Xilen, you should not use this drug on your own, discuss with your doctor the treatment with similar drugs.

Side effect

With prolonged (or too frequent) use of Xylen, dryness, irritation of the nasopharyngeal mucosa may occur (this may be manifested by sneezing, burning, mucus hypersecretion). Rarely, vomiting, headache, palpitations, tachycardia, increased blood pressure, arrhythmia, blurred vision, insomnia, depression may occur. For the occurrence of such side effects, the use of Xylen should be long-term and in excess doses.

The use of Xylen during pregnancy and lactation

The use of Xylen during pregnancy, as well as during breastfeeding, is not recommended. The drug itself does not have a negative effect on the fetus, but it can affect the blood pressure of a pregnant woman, as well as the vascular tone of the placenta.

Dosage and administration

Xilen should be instilled into each nasal passage (after preliminary cleansing) 1-2 drops of a 0.1% solution (for adults and children over the years) no more than 2-3 times a day.

Infants and children under 6 years of age are recommended to use a 0.05% Xylen solution, 1-2 drops in each nasal passage once / twice a day.

This drug should not be used more than 3 times a day and for more than 5 days.

Xylen overdose

In case of an overdose, the above symptoms of side effects occur. Treatment is aimed at stopping the use of the drug and eliminating the symptoms that have arisen.

Interaction with other drugs

Xylene cannot be used simultaneously with MAO (monoamine oxidase) inhibitors, as well as with tricyclic antidepressants.

Special instructions for the use of Xylen

Before instillation of the drug in the nasal passages should be cleared. In chronic rhinitis, long-term use of Xylen is unacceptable.

pharmachologic effect

Xylin has a direct effect on the nasal mucosa and is used topically to reduce the inflammatory process and exudation in it due to local vasoconstriction. Reduces or eliminates hyperemia and swelling of the nasal mucosa and facilitates nasal breathing in rhinitis.

The effect of the drug occurs within a few minutes after application and lasts up to 10 hours.

Pharmacokinetics

Indications for use

- rhinitis of various types;

Diseases of the paranasal sinuses (to facilitate drainage);

Otitis media (as part of combination therapy to reduce swelling of the nasopharyngeal mucosa);

To facilitate rhinoscopy.

Contraindications

Hypersensitivity to xylometazoline and other components of the drug;

Glaucoma;

Dry rhinitis;

Transsphenoidal hypophysectomy or other surgical intervention with violation of the integrity of the meninges;

Surgical interventions on the meninges (in history);

Children's age: up to 2 years - a solution with a concentration of 0.5 mg / 1 ml.

up to 6 years - a solution with a concentration of 1 mg / 1 ml.

Pregnancy and lactation

Given the presence of vasoconstrictor properties in xylometazoline, the use of Xylin during pregnancy and lactation should be avoided for reasons of precaution. However, if the benefit to the mother outweighs the potential risk to the fetus or child, the use of the drug during pregnancy and lactation (breastfeeding) is acceptable without exceeding the recommended therapeutic doses.

Dosage and administration

Xylin is used intranasally, instilled into the nose using the nozzle on the bottle.

A solution with a concentration of 0.5 mg / 1 ml is prescribed on the recommendation of a doctor for children aged 2 to 6 years, 1-2 drops in each nasal passage 1-2 times a day. Do not use the drug more than 3 times a day.

A solution with a concentration of 1 mg / 1 ml is prescribed for adults and children over 6 years old, 2-3 drops in each nasal passage 3-4 times a day. The course of treatment is usually 5-7 days. Performing the instillation procedure: before using the drug and 5 minutes after its use, it is necessary to clean the nasal passages. Remove the cap from the vial before use. Tilt your head back in a sitting position or lie down, gently insert the tip of the nozzle of the bottle turned upside down into one of the halves of the nose, drip the drug into each half of the nose, gently tilt your head from side to side several times. After use, clean the tip of the nozzle, close the vial with a cap. The vial should only be used by one person due to the risk of infection transmission.

Side effect

From the respiratory system:

Short-term irritation (burning or dryness of the nasal mucosa). In rare cases, an increase in edema of the mucous membrane, increased discharge from the nose and the appearance of a feeling of "congestion" due to reactive hyperemia.

Long-term or frequent use of high doses of Xylin can lead to burning, dryness, and reactive rhinitis. This effect can be observed even 5-7 days after completion of treatment and can lead to irreversible damage to the mucous membrane and dry rhinitis.

From the nervous system:

In rare cases, headache, insomnia, fatigue occur.

From the side of the cardiovascular system:

Rarely: palpitations, increased heart rate, increased blood pressure.

From the immune system:

Rarely: allergic reactions, shortness of breath, angioedema.

If the listed adverse reactions occur, as well as any adverse event not indicated in the instructions, you should immediately consult a doctor.

Overdose

Symptoms: No cases of drug overdose in adults have been reported. In rare cases, with accidental ingestion of the drug (more often in children), the clinical picture was dominated by symptoms such as tachycardia, arrhythmia, increased blood pressure, drowsiness, confusion, respiratory depression or irregular breathing.

Treatment: discontinuation, adrenoblockers, symptomatic therapy (vasopressor drugs are contraindicated).

Interaction with other drugs

With the simultaneous appointment of tricyclic or tetracyclic antidepressants, MAO inhibitors, an increase in blood pressure is possible. Co-administration of other vasoconstrictor drugs increases the risk of side effects.

Most parents believe that children's rhinitis does not need to be treated, but you just need to periodically rinse your baby's nose with salt water. It is possible, but on the condition that the runny nose is a copious watery discharge that flows freely from the nasal cavity. Dr. Komarovsky is of the same opinion, but recommends closely monitoring the course of the disease and using vasoconstrictor nasal drops if the child has:

  • completely blocked nose;
  • high fever and difficult nasal breathing;
  • partially stuffy nose and difficulty breathing through the mouth;

It is in such cases when the mucus in the nose:

  • becomes viscous and thick;
  • severely clogs the nasal passages,

thereby disrupting the baby's natural respiratory function, the use of a vasoconstrictor drug is simply necessary. Xylen eliminates nasal congestion and restores normal breathing in a child.

Xilen is a vasoconstrictor drug for the treatment of the common cold.

Composition and principle of action

Xylene is a clear solution based on the active substance xylometazoline hydrochloride, which belongs to the group of decongestants. These chemicals cause the blood vessels to constrict.

When the drug enters the nasal mucosa, the intensity of the blood supply to the nasal cavity decreases.

Already after a few minutes, the swelling of the tissues decreases, the lumen of the nasal passages is restored, and the stagnant mucus freely comes out.

Indications

The pediatrician prescribes Xylen to the child with:

  • severe nasal congestion during SARS;

The medicine begins to act almost immediately after application.

  • allergic rhinitis during an exacerbation;
  • acute otitis.

Also, the drug is used before the rhinoscopy procedure to prevent swelling of the nasal mucosa during its examination (using special dilators and mirrors) to detect pathology.

Release form, dosage and price

Xylen is produced in the form of drops and spray of different dosages and volumes:

  • Drops: 1 dropper bottle with a volume of 10 ml contains 0.05% or 0.1% solution of the active substance.
  • Spray: 1 spray bottle contains the same percentage dosage of xylometazoline as the drop form, but can have different capacities - 10, 15, 20 and 30 ml.

Pay attention to the dosage!

The exact dose and volume of the drug are indicated individually on each package of the drug and in its instructions.

The average cost of 1 bottle of Russian-made Xylene drops is 50 rubles, and a spray - 134 rubles.

Mode of application

Xylene drops

Before using the drug, help your baby blow his nose well or rinse his nose with saline.

Rinse your nose with salt water and ask your child to blow their nose before using the medicine.

After removing the accumulated mucus, you can use the medicine. In order to prevent the solution from getting into the throat when instilled, help the child to take the correct posture, and during the procedure, watch the tilt of his head.

The sequence of actions should look like this.

  1. Have the child sit on a chair or lie down on a bed.
  2. Tilt his head back a little, drop a xylometazoline solution into one nasal passage and hold it with your finger, immediately tilt the baby's head to the side. In which nostril they dripped, in the same direction and tilt.
  3. Do the same for the other nasal passage.

According to the instructions for use of the drug:

  • Infants and toddlers up to 6 years old instill 0.05% medicinal solution 1-2 drops into each nostril. Since the action of Xylen lasts for 10-12 hours, the frequency of use of the drug should be no more than 3 times a day.
  • For children from 6 years old you can apply a 0.1% solution of 1-2 drops in each nasal passage from 2 to 3 times a day.

The treatment regimen is prescribed by the doctor.

Spray Xylen

Before using the spray, also pre-clean the nose of the child. When using this dosage form of Xylen, the baby does not need to take a special position. Simply, holding the medicine bottle upright, insert the tip of the nozzle into the nasal passage of your ward and press it. A finely dispersed suspension of the drug will spray from the sprayer and evenly cover the entire inner surface of the nostril. Repeat exactly the same steps with the other nasal passage.

The concentration of the active substance in the Xymelin spray is the same as in the drop form of the drug, so the treatment regimen will be similar:

  • 0.05% solution: 1-2 injections in each nasal passage for babies under 6 years old, 1-2 times a day;
  • 0.1% solution: 1-2 injections in each nostril for children over 6 years old up to 3 times a day.

Contraindications

The drug should not be used to treat children suffering from serious diseases:

  • cardiovascular system - atherosclerosis, arterial hypertension, tachycardia;
  • eye - glaucoma;
  • nose - chronic inflammation of the mucosa.

Also, Xylen cannot be used to treat children who have undergone surgery on the tissues of the brain or spinal cord.

With extreme caution and under the supervision of a physician, the medicinal solution is prescribed for:

  • angina;
  • diabetes mellitus;
  • thyroid diseases.

Side effects

Unpleasant consequences may occur if the drug was used more often 3 times a day and more than 5 days. Therefore, the mother should refuse to use the drug if the baby has the following symptoms:

  • the child complains of a burning sensation in the nose and a headache;

When using Xylen, a burning sensation in the nose is possible.

  • often sneezes after instillation of Xylen;
  • does not smell;
  • his nose is constantly running;
  • he does not sleep well;
  • becomes lethargic and moody.

In rare cases, a small patient develops complications that may require emergency medical care:

  • vomit;

Taking the drug may cause nausea or vomiting.

  • severe swelling of the tissues of the nose;
  • visual impairment;
  • cardiopalmus;
  • tachycardia;
  • high blood pressure;
  • arrhythmia.

Compatibility with other drugs

It is impossible to combine the reception of Xylen and any antidepressants at the same time(for example, Aurorix, Pyrazidol, Befol) and sedatives, even of plant origin (for example, Afobazol, Negrustin). Such a combination may lead to the appearance or increase of side effects.

Analogues

If the pharmacy accidentally did not have Xylen, then you can buy its analogues, which include the same active substance:

  • Tizin. Approved for use in the treatment of children from 2 years. The average cost is 159 rubles. Country of origin - Germany.
  • . Can be used for babies from 2 years old. The average price is 81 rubles. Production - Russia.

Xilen's analogue is Rinostop.
